One of the main reasons I keep our home minimal is that it's extremely easy to maintain in this busy season of life with two under two. A fun benefit is that it also gives our space an aesthetic that I love to decorate with!

I believe there is no right or wrong way to decorate your home. You should always create a space in the way you think is best!

Below are some tips and tricks I’ve learned that have helped keep our home simple, yet still stylish.

HOW TO STYLE YOUR HOME LIKE A MINIMALIST

Clear Out Objects

This is the best tip I can give you to decorate like a minimalist. Clear out as much furniture and accessories/items as you can from a room. The more I edit a space, the better it feels. Whenever I am stumped on how to style a room, I sometimes find that just simply eliminating a few things is all that is needed.

Objectively look at your storage systems, artwork on the walls, chairs, and pieces of furniture. Things that have always been a part of your space. Do you really need all of it?

Get creative if you aren’t comfortable parting with pieces yet and experiment to see how you feel with them tucked away for a few days. If you need help getting started, I have a few blog posts: Tips to Start Decluttering and 15 Thing To Declutter Right Now

Clear Surfaces

I like to keep any of our surfaces as clear as possible. Dressers, tables, kitchen counters, and bookshelves - anything on them must serve a purpose or be beautiful in order to have a spot. I try to edit surfaces frequently as these are the areas where clutter can easily creep in.

Smart Storage

One way to keep surfaces clear is to use smart storage. Baskets and boxes are my favorite way of hiding clutter while still keeping a room functional. I keep all my makeup products in a basket on our dresser and my hair tools hidden in a magazine case next to it. Easy to grab and hidden when not in use.

I use these cute storage bins to store hand-me-downs and thrifted baskets to hold laundry.

I love to use peg racks to keep my most-used items easy to access.

Embrace White Space

Blank walls open up a space and draw the eyes to specific areas of a room. I’ve experimented with gallery walls and will occasionally hang up an art piece or two, but I always find blank white walls are my favorite way of embracing minimalism when it comes to interior styling.

Clear Sight-lines

I find floor space can easily become cluttered and turn into a storage area. I try to find a home for each and every item up off of the floor. Except for furniture pieces and a few plants, I try to keep as much of our floor space and baseboards visible. It’s a great trick to make a room seem less cluttered.

Multipurpose Items

For me, items on display must be beautiful and useful. This might sound strange, but I don’t have accessories in our home that do not serve some sort of practical purpose. Our lamp is decorative and useful. So is our tea kettle that is always sitting out on our kitchen stove. Every accessory has a use and I am selective in how they fit into the aesthetic of our home.

Curate

I love several different interior styles, but that doesn’t mean I need all of them in my home. In the past, when I would go shopping, I would pick up anything and everything that I liked but didn’t necessarily love

I believe each and every item in our homes should be our absolute favorite. If you don’t love it, maybe you don’t need it in your space. There’s no need to fill it with lots of things you like when it may look better with just a few items that you love. You may find your style is more defined and highlights your favorite items when there is less around it.

I used to have a larger collection of mugs (and still probably have too many) but I decided just to keep my absolute favorites to display.
