DIY Hand-Painted Wallpaper Tutorial
Last year, I wanted to give my kids' bedroom a budget-friendly upgrade with some wallpaper. However, traditional wallpaper can be quite expensive and a hassle to remove if I ever want to change the space. So, I decided to try my hand at creating my own DIY hand-painted wallpaper using just paint and a few sponges.
It transformed the room with just a few materials and was incredibly easy and affordable. I was amazed at how cute it turned out!
Materials Needed
Dish Sponges (I used regular kitchen sponges, cutting them into petal shapes)
Round art sponges (These are great for creating floral designs like mine!)
Paint Brushes or Foam Sponges like these (For touching up details or to create small stems on leaves)
Paint
Tips for Success
Practice First: Start by cutting your sponges into the shapes you plan to use for your wallpaper pattern. I cut kitchen sponges into several petal shapes and used round art sponges for circles to form a floral design. Begin in an inconspicuous spot to practice.
Go Organic: Don’t worry about perfection! I didn't follow a specific pattern, use a laser level, or even measure out my wallpaper design. I worked methodically from one side of the room to the other, taking a few steps back occasionally to assess how it was coming together. Enjoy the process of creating a unique pattern and texture!
Be Patient: Allow each layer to fully dry before adding more paint. I used two different colors for our pattern, going over certain areas with a darker shade once the first layer was dry.
Enjoy!
